The heart of Spain
With its vast open spaces, magnificent buildings and world-famous museums, Madrid combines proud Castilian tradition and history with the cutting-edge modernity of its legendary nightlife, designer shops and stores.

Each of Madrid's barrios (districts) has distinct attractions: from the tiled bars and cervecerias of the Plaza de Santa Ana to the narrow streets of La Latina, Lavapies, Chueca or Malasana, and from the Sunday market of El Rastro to the green oasis of the Retiro.
Fly to Madrid and transfer to your hotel (approximately 45 minutes). After checking in, join the Madrilenos in sampling a selection of authentic tapas, or stroll Gran Via, the city's most famous street.
Our included tour introduces the city, after which you're free to explore. Wander Puerta del Sol, discover the colonnades of Plaza Major, and see the magnificent Royal Palace. Later, visit the world-class collections of the Museo del Prado, Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza, and Centro de Arte Reina Sofia - home of Picasso's 'Guernica'.
Explore Madrid today, or join our optional excursion to Spain's medieval capital Toledo, with its vast walls overlooking the River Tagus. Its maze of cobbled streets and fascinating Jewish Quarter have barely changed since El Greco painted here four centuries before.
Transfer back to the airport for check-in and your flight home.
Madrid is a shopper's paradise. For department stores, try the Corte Ingles at Puerta del Sol; and for smaller unique shops, the Plaza Mayor. For designers, explore Salamanca or the streets of Almirante and Conde de Xiquen. If bargains are your thing, head for Rastro, Madrid's best-known flea market.
Madrid is a melting pot of Iberian cuisine. It even boasts the oldest restaurant in the world: Botin, dating back to 1725. In many restaurants the 'menu del dia' offers the best value. Cocido madrileno (local meat and vegetable stew) is a must, as is an evening touring tapas bars.
The discotecas of Chueca and Malasana are the places to dance the night (and the next morning) away. However, if your style is more sedate, head to Plaza Santa Ana for a typical cerveceria, or enjoy a flamenco performance or a street serenade by 'tuna' musicians in medieval costume.
