Resort Information

Lake Bohinj

Set in the beautiful surrounds of the Triglav National Park, beneath the 'three peaks' (Triglav) of Slovenia's highest mountain and national symbol, the tiny village of Ribcev laz sits on the shore of the stunning and fiercely protected lake, a haven for nature lovers, hikers and those looking to relax and unwind.

Rabac

Squeezed into a narrow bay and backed by wooded hills, the picturesque resort village of Rabac (pronounced Ra-batts), on the east coast of the Istrian peninsula, is a popular holiday haven, with its hotels, bars and restaurants ranged along the wooded shoreline of an invitingly blue and invariably calm sea.

Itinerary

Day One

Fly to Croatia. Upon arrival, you'll meet your guide and transfer to beautiful Lake Bohinj and your base for the next three nights.

Day Two

After a morning left free for rest and relaxation, this afternoon we'll board the coach for our included excursion to Bled. This celebrated resort sits on the shore of its beautiful lake amid the high peaks of the Julian Alps. Enjoy the atmosphere of this, Slovenia's most visited resort, and perhaps ride a gondola-like pletnjja to picturesque Bled Island, which sits in the middle of the lake.

Day Three

Today you're free to further explore, though many will want to join our optional excursion to see the natural wonders of the Julian Alps - Slovenia's famed winter playground. Visit Alpine Kranjska Gora, a Mecca for skiers and particularly ski-jumpers, and soak up the scenes as we pass through the picturesque villages and hamlets that dot the region.

Day Four

Today we head south, across Slovenia's fertile plains, stopping to visit one of the world's most famous caves - the giant chasm at Postojna. Take the train some two miles underground, then tread the paths of this nether world of stalactites and stalagmites.

Continuing back across the Croatian border, we'll stop briefly elegant Opatija, where great hotels and casinos once welcomed nineteenth-century Viennese visitors to the Austro-Hungarian equivalent of the Cote d'Azur, before arriving in Rabac in the afternoon.

Day Five

After a relaxed morning, enjoy time 'on the water' with experienced local fishermen on our optional 'fish picnic' excursion, a popular way to explore this stunning coastline and to taste some of the delicious local fish.

Day Six

On today's full-day optional excusion, you'll see the very best of Istria: the provincial capital, Pula, famed for its vast Roman amphitheatre; Rovinj, rising Venice-like out of the water, her narrow streets leading ever upwards to the Baroque church of St Euphemia; and Porec, its ancient streets surrounding its striking Venetian bell-tower and UNESCO-listed Basilica of Euphrasius.

Day Seven

Our final optional excursion begins early, as we drive to the stunning lakes of Plitvice National Park - justifiably Croatia's most visited natural attraction. Sixteen bodies of water, backed by breathtaking scenery, are linked by waterfalls and rapids, which tumble down the time-weathered terraces. Enjoy a wonderful day amid the beautiful scenery before returning to Rabac this evening.

Day Eight

Transfer back to the airport for check-in and your flight home.

Further Information

Wining and dining

As you might expect from countries lying between the Adriatic and the Alps, the local cuisine varies from seafood and Italian-influenced pastas to hearty meat-dishes. In the majority of hotels, you will enjoy on-the-spot 'show-cooking', as chefs prepare dishes in front of you. Don't miss any opportunity to try prsut, local home-cured ham.

The region's wines - especially those produced in Slovenia - are very pleasant, and several local breweries provide an endless supply of good beers.
