A festive fairytale
Celebrate the season in a land of pine-and birch-blanketed mountains, crystal-clear lakes, spectacular waterfalls and romantic valleys. Stay in carefully selected traditional hotels, where the half-board arrangements include a light lunch and a traditional turkey dinner on Christmas Day, and enjoy an included visit to beautiful Freiburg.
Single rooms are available for a supplement
Leaving the local area in the morning we travel to Dover or Folkestone for our channel crossing. Once in France, we continue to Germany, arriving at our hotel in the Black Forest in the evening. Our hosts will make us feel especially welcome as we settle down to dinner.
After a leisurely breakfast, join our optional Christmas Eve excursion to the picturesque Alsace town of Colmar. Colmar boasts not one, but five, Christmas Markets - each perfect for raising the Christmas spirit and picking up some last-minute gifts.
In the afternoon we'll head back to our hotel, in plenty of time for dinner.
Will we awaken to a "White Christmas" on Christmas Day? It's certainly possible. But, whatever the weather, the romantic setting of our hotel is sure to make this a special day.
Spend the morning relaxing and, after a light lunch, join our included visit to the historic university town of Freiburg. Explore the winding lanes (Gassle) and 'Bachle' (little streams that run through the streets), stroll around the beautiful squares and discover the soaring 116-metre Gothic Minster before we return to the hotel to continue the celebrations with a superb Christmas turkey dinner.
Our Boxing Day optional excursion includes some of the highlights of this remarkable region. We'll begin with a visit to the Dorotheenhutte - the region's only hand-blown-glass factory - before continuing to Triberg, a noted woodcarving and clock-making centre. From Triberg we'll follow the scenic route to Hinterzarten, before heading to the delightful lakeside town of Titisee - a stunning resort nestled on the shore of a crystal-clear lake.
Bidding a fond "Auf Wiedersehen" to our hosts, we retrace our steps to Calais and across the Channel. Once back in the UK, we'll make our way to the local area, arriving in the late evening.
Local traditions may mean that Christmas Eve afternoon and Christmas Day tend to be quiet, with shops and restaurants closed until December 26th.
